The district mayor who was at the center of a row involving the yet to register Democratic Green Party of Rwanda has resigned citing “personal reasons”, reports say.
Mr. Rutayisire Origène tendered his resignation Monday to the Nyarugenge district council but did not detail why he was giving up his office, state radio said. The council is set to decide on whether to accept Mr. Rutayisire resignation.

Last month, he found himself in the firing line after – under unclear circumstances, he withdrew permission for the Green Party to meet just minutes before the start of its founding congress on October 02. He however denied any wrong doing.

Mr. Rutayisire also tenders his move-out at a time when several local and central government officials are facing possible prosecution on corruption and embezzlement. Several officials of the Gasabo district neighbouring Nyarugenge are now in detention for misusing several hundred million francs, and the mayor herself is under investigation.
